I had the same problem just a few months ago. and i couldn't get it primed for the life of me and paint getting over everything it was a mess, i just bought a simple o ring seal kit and put it in right there on the job site in about 15 min. i hope this helps.

Hi Terri,
Where I live here in Australia we have a product called KNEAD IT.
Its a two part polymer repair filler, you cut a piece off then with your fingers you knead it together. It works a bit like putty, but once it's mixed together you have a very short time to work with it. It sets rock hard, "I mean really rock hard"

You can use this to repair your primer knob. If you can't buy this brand where you live, there is sure to be something similar.
