lol I just love how some of the people who answered you assumed that you were annoyed by people directing the phrase at gay people. To me that just goes to show that the phrase is so common now, that many straight people don't even notice that "that's so gay" has been ingrained into many people's daily language to describe objects and concepts.
Yeah this is one of my pet peeves so I'm gonna let off some steam if you don't mind. I appreciate the opportunity for it. :) Yes it annoys me when people say that. But it annoys me more when I can't find a way to communicate how wrong that phrase is. I did do a similar the tactic that someone else said they use... If someone called a chair or a joke gay I would say "Really!?!? It's gay???" in my most incredulous tone. About half the time they'd stop and think about it and laugh and say "well you know what I mean." So obviously I'm not so good at using that tactic. :( I wish I was!!! Would make my life easier.
Then I moved on to saying "that's so straight" whenever the person told a stupid joke or commented on how bad a movie was. I've gotten varied sucess with that one.
When people try to tell me it's just a phrase or that it's just slang I point out to them that people never use the phrase to describe something positive. No one says "wow that painting is beautiful... it's so gay!" Or "Man, I just won an all-expenses paid cruise! That's so gay!" I try to explain to them that by using the term to describe only negative things they are perpetuating the belief that being gay is a negative because they are linking the two concepts in their speech. Then they try to tell me that well obviously they don't think that way because they have gay friends. Then I point out to them that it doesn't matter what they think. It's what they say.
No matter what approach I use it's like trying to tie my shoes with spaghetti. Usually unsuccessful and always frustrating. :sigh:
Okay, done venting/answering this question. :)

My daughters friend used that word last Friday when she was over & you should have seen the look on my daughters face because she knew I couldn't just let it go. I don't know if it was my place to verbally say something to her but I did anyway since that word is like the n word which I don't allow in my home. After I got done with my lecture the girl apologized & as she was leaving said that the next time she came over she promised she would not say that again, I said ok but don't say it ANYWHERE. Does anyone think I overreacted?

To jen: First of all, you're sheer genius and I wish I was first to hit the nail on the head like you did so briliantly.
To elaborate, to say that something "is so gay" not only is homophobic, it's intolerant to any difference in general. Someone could be called gay for reading Hemingway instead of comic books or chick lit for goodness sakes. basically, "That's so gay" is just code for "I can't aceept that you're different from me."

It's not annoying, it's pathetic that little kids are using "gay" in a negative sense... when they say "that's so gay" it's usually not something good. It makes it seem like being gay is a bad thing.

It bothered me before I realized that I was Bi, before I had ever been with a woman.
Most negative slang bothers me, though. This is the same as saying "THE N WORD". These phrases are used by people who fear or don't understand something.

Ya, I really hate that when my teens say "that is so gay"...I ask them (in an incredulous voice) "oh wow, it has homosexual tendancies?"
Also, "that is so retarded". I work in the Resource Room with develpmentaly delayed children....
Gay=happy
Fag=cigarette (or light)
Retarded=slowed down
Ignorant=uneducated and uncaring
.

My teenager used to say it all the time...it used to be followed by sorry Dad..no offense but I just laughed, now she does not say it much.
I have never taken it as an insult but it is a slam in a way.
Try saying..."that's so straight" and see what happens. :)

Schoolchildren picking up 'cool' words to say like 'gay' meaning 'nerdy' does not bother me because it is not used in a malelovent way but in a casual, childish way.

Not really, I use the term and I'm gay. I use it to describe something that is so stereotypical as to be ridiculous.
