We own two older, expensive White's brand detectors. We enjoyed them a lot, but haven't had time to go detecting for several years. I always loved to go detecting and got so absorbed in it that I forgot all my troubles. It's good exercise and you do find coins and occasionally will find rings, etc., but maybe not as often as the ads show. Probably it depends on where you live as well as how often you go out.
A mid-range price detector may be a good starting point. Some places will let you trade up later, I believe. Learn to tune and use your detector correctly and you will find more with it. Headphones are an option which let you hear well even in high-noise areas. Just be aware of your surroundings and any dangers like traffic, animals, cliffs, or even snakes. It's easy to have total concentration and become unaware. And there are coil protectors that I recommend. I used an old hunting knife or a large screwdriver to dig with and was careful not to damage the object I had located.
I advise you to always get permission if there's any question about your hunting site. Some people are very agreeable about allowing detectors on their property, some are not. People who detect and leave holes and dirt scattered around can ruin everyones chances of getting permission for future hunting.
To answer your question, in my opinion, a good detector is worth the money for the enjoyment of the hobby, but doubt I will ever get rich finding things. These have been a lot of fun though, and you never know what you will turn up.

You can buy really cheap ones in toy stores, but they don't work all that well.
