Reagan got the USSR to engage in an arms race with the US this helped to detroy the soveit economy. So in that sence yes he did for without Reagan haveing the balls to stand up against that evil (atheisic) world system they might still be around today. Nevertheless, I think even old dutch would addmitt that that empire could not endure much longer to it internal corruption.
Leftist hate giving Reagan any credit for it and aaucaly say our good freind "Govy" was the peace maker. But this is basic wishful thinking and its not true. Regan push them to self detrucked.

No. America's economy won the Cold War. Russia simply couldn't keep up to their defense spending. Reagan happened to be president at the right time.

Regan realized that the Russian economy was going into the tank so the best way to win the cold war was get into an arms race and bankrupt the Russians into surrendering. It worked with flying colors. So yes he did win the cold war.

NO....! An event such as "winning" the Cold War could NEVER be attributed to the actions of only one individual. There were many people, and many reasons for the end of the Cold War. Sadly, judging by the lame responses given here, you'll need to read deeper into History, since many of the people here did not.
Think about it. Read about it. Question it.

Nobody won the cold war. It cost the US and USSR trillions of dollars over something that could not be won by either side. In the end, though the US gloated over it, both sides decided that the end result of the escalation would be worldwide Armageddon.

No. The Russian people did. Along with Solidarity. Huge amounts of money were spent by both sides which could have been spent elsewhere, but instead went into military spending.
The Russians realised it was futile and quit, but the U.S. has continued to spend huge amounts on unnecessary military adventures.

He was kind of around at the time.....
They woke him only when necessary.
The SALT negotiations played a big part in thawing relations, as did having Gorbachov and Yeltsin in positions of sufficient power to explore reform within the then Soviet system.
Quite honestly, neither Washington or Moscow behave as if the Cold War IS over, so maybe it isn't.

Yes-maybe not single-handedly, but his administration's policies helped to lead to the bankruptcy of the USSR government and being unable to continue to participate in the arms race.
