Ok so here's the thing, right now I'm working on editing a book that I finished writing close to a year ago but it's coming to a standstill. Largely because it's just hitting too close to home and I need a break. Okay truth is I haven't worked on it in months but I want to get back into writing. Thing is I'm not ready to get back to work on the YA novel. The other problem is that my mind is racing and I have all kinds of ideas for different stories to write but I don't know how to develop any of them right now. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want to work on some of the things racing through my head, partly in hopes that it will help slow them down a little, but not sure which one to work on right now.

i wrote a YA novel last year and finished the first couple of drafts back in May. i've been editing/re-writing it since about July. the problem is that the subject matter hits pretty close to home and at times is a little draining (at the time I was just getting on to the paper it was very charitic but not so much now).
right now my main problem is that i have so many ideas bouncing around at once that it's hard to sort them out and truthfully not really sure how well most of them would translate to paper.
i've been keeping a journal of sort the last couple of months, so i haven't completely stopped writing just not anything in the "creative" realm and i miss it
part of what i'm trying to figure out is what would make a good story and how to write it, not so much for publication more just to get back in the grove

Sit down and write out some of the stuff that is racing around in your mind. Elaborate on them, once you have them in writing. (ie. If I had this happen in a story, what would lead up to it, what would happen after that...etc?) It sounds to me like you have so many possibilities that they are all getting mixed up and cluttered. If you organize them, it will help give you a better idea of what you have to work with.

That happens to me all of the time. I get tons of great ideas but they feel like a puzzle that was just dumped on the table. The only way for me to deal with it, is to sit down and sort them out and piece them together.

I don't really know which part you're being honest about: are you editing a work or have you put it off for some months?

Secondly, if you've put it off for a few months, it sounds like a bit of anxiety from not working on anything. It happens to me sometimes when I take too long of a break from working on a story that means a lot to me.

Also, a journal might help alleviate the distractions and provide an outlet for some of the things going on that are keeping you from your work.

It needs to be meaningful to you--not just on a "that's-interesting-and -might-sell" level. It also needs to spark the interest of others. Share general ideas around and see what people react to. It might not be the ones you expect.

If i was you i would write all of your ideas down and then brain strorm each idea and see which one shows the most promise to write about. even if you come to a stand still on that first idea you still have all of your back ups already written down.
