Anyone else find Maria Sharapova's grunting during matches completely annoying like i do?I feel bad for her opponents,i think its rather unfair to them.Distracting too.Maybe thats why she is #1 in the world, her opponents have to play her,and her sound.

I also heard that its difficult for some of her opponents because they cannot hear the ball being struck by Maria due to her grunt,so they cant gauge the velocity of the ball coming back at them, and as a result they have to guess...which makes sense.

Sharapova's grunting doesn't violate any laws of the game and she has the right to do so. As for it being a tool to distract her opposition and "mask" the nature (spin and speed) of her shots; there doesn't appear to be any evidence for this, and if it was true, it still doesn't violate any laws. If it was true, then it would give her a bad reputation and lower her sportmanship, which would affect her public relations and possibly sponsorship deals; so she has a lot to loss by doing so. No action can or should be be taken at the moment, but if her grunting was used to provide an upperhand, than officials would need to decide whether this should be allowed. In my opinion, it's extremely difficult to place a law on the loudness of someone's grunting (Where do you draw the line? Do you measure the loudness of a players' every grunt during a match to see if one of them violates the law?). Grunting is a very natural thing to tennis players and any type of regulation would be higher unlikely.

As a side note, I believe the fact that Sharapova's a woman makes her more vunerable to this view (I'm a male by the way, so no biasism). Sharapova probably wouldn't be too much louder than, say, Nadal. Also, young players (male and female) tend to grunt more because they are more emotional involved in winning and losing a match. I think her grunting will settle down in a few years anyway and it won't be such an issue.

I thought Seles had an annoying loud grunt but compared to the grunts of Sharapova, the Seles grunts sound like music. What I find very amusing is how her grunts turn into squeals when Sharapova realizes that the ball she hit is about to miss the line.

I can enjoy watching Maria play because a) she is absolutely gorgeous and b) she is extremely talented.

There was a time when many complaints were made about the severity and loudness of her grunts and questions were asked if Sharapova used her grunts as a weapon to distract her opponents. I don't know what the outcome was. I would like to find out though.

I don't have a problem with the grunting because some people do and some don't, but she seems to grunt strategically. Almost all players that grunt do it with every shot but she'll go whole matches without doing it then in her next match it's unbearable. She also seems to do it later than everybody else. She sometimes grunts once the ball is across the net which is very strange.

Yeah, a complete buffalo grunt. She probably thinks she is taking part in a shrieking competition or something. She even does not hit the ball that hard! Henin is much thinner than her, hits the ball as hard or even harder and never caws, same goes for Clijsters (she is not thin, but the Serena-like power with which she plays actually requires a shriek). That Sharapova definitely does that to distract her opponents....

Yup she is annoying and a complete cheat. Puts it on when she feels like it.

A few years ago she had an Aus Open match against Lindsay Lee Waters and they both hrunted on every point... that was just funny, I now joke with my mum let's play tennis, she sharapova grunts then I Waters grunt haha. Is there a way to put sound recordings on this?

C) Don't mind She knows it's loud and the more people complain the louder she'll get. It's probably distracting/annoying to her opponents so she's playing mental games. But if I was playing for millions, I'd grunt loud too.

Yes, her grunting is really loud and annoying. It's also a distraction to some of the other players, but those who complain about her grunts are usually jealous of her for getting so many endorsements, so serves them right. But she does take an eternity to prepare for her serve.

I don't find it annoying just way awesome lets you know that she is giving her all. If you were a true fan it would not bother you at all. I love to be able to watch on the T.V and feel like I am part of the game. Though as you said for the players I have thought that too. She is the all time greatest though!! At least in my book.

i dont care she is the best tennis player going around at the moment in my opinion. she has a bit of improvment needed in some areas of her game but how many women can hit the ball as hard as she does and not look like a man?!?
