During the last 50 years for my memory. I have heard many State of the Union Addresses. Tonight has not changed. Again The current President : used the buzz words: Taxes, Health care, Education and Social Security about fixing and changing them. Are not the thinkers tired of the emtpy handed politicians with the same empty meaningless rhetoric? For those who are Republicans and for those who are Democrats is it not time for change for a completely new honest party. From anothers post

I think you saw an act of attrition in this speech tonight. The President showed a willingness to compromise, something that he has never done. Speaking about immigration, health care, and schools. It wasn't until the Iraq sections that I think Democrats became uneasy. This speech was much more for the Democratic Congress than the American people. Something I thought was interesting was how he didn't give a whole lot of plans about how to do some of the things he proposed, like energy independence. He gave a number to shoot for, but not a plan on how to get to that number. He wants bio-fuels, but is he willing to help pay for that? He wants to cut spending but where does he want to cut? The next few weeks will show us just how heartfelt this speech was.

Havent watched it all yet. I liked the immigration portion and the energy portion.
I think it will give him a boost in approval rating but I dont think it will be a dramatic increase.
He catered a bit to both.
Well as far as cynicism.. its the people who are open minded that might be... there are some people so bitter vs Bush there is nothing he could do that would change their opinions.
From what I have seen so far its good.
But its deeds, not words, that make the difference.
Unfortunately he can say all he wants but most of the things he proposes are up to congress to pass. All the domestic issues are. So unless they will pass a health care , education, immigration etc etc.. bill then he cant sign it into law.
We shall see.

I will admit, it was a good speech. He will get a small up bump. I don't think it will be permanent. Bush says too many things that he does not really mean. As more troops die in Iraq, his approval rating will continue to fall, unless he decides to be more that a one trick pony with all focus on Iraq, and no focus on anything else.
Lets not forget, the only reason we are in Iraq is because Bush insisted we go there. He never really gave Iraq any options that would have allowed them to "save face". Before we invaded, he did not allow for a negotiated agreement, just more sanctions that hurt Iraqi people and did not hurt Saddam. What gets me is; now Bush is surprised that Iraq does not want to cooperate with his plans.

That is a lot of questions, I think it was just some more, some more. His approvals will probably get a bump, most do but if his stay the course on steroids plan doesn't show some improvement by summer they will be even farther in the toilet then they are now. My take on the speech was that it was just some more Bushisms. Nothing that can help the average American to better their lives.

President Bush made it very clear what would happen if we did not continue fighting and defending in Iraq, and all of the horrors that he pointed out would surely take place if we quit the war against terror. The troop increase is certainly a good step toward achieving our objective, and I don't (and never have) doubted President Bush's efforts.

It was a very good speech. He spoke of victory.
He spoke of working together in a bi-partisan manner.
He spoke of keeping money going to Africa to fight
Aids, he spoke of cutting out the pork that Congressmen
put into otherwise good bills. He spoke of our good
economy. He spoke of our need to keep our citizens
at home safe from terror attacks, and we have guys
in the military who enlist on their own to fight for just
that. Will it change minds.....? No, because liberals are
so full of hate and revenge, you'll never change them.

Nothing that Bush can say will effect his approval ratings: the time for talk is long past.
Only success in Iraq can save him now.
