well if u dont have body work to do then it is pretty simple. first wat you have to do is take off all of your emblems and other things that you dont want painted. next scuff ur paint with a red scuff pad so that there is no shinyness to it. (you can pick up scuff pads at any auto body store... you can only just scuff and paint your car if u have no rust or cracked paint). make sure to scuff the door jams to or else the paint will look funny. if u have rusted spots or cracked paint then sand down those spots so that there even with something like 320 grit sand paper. after that then u can paint. so i take it that ur painting it urself so to paint it your going to need a paint gun. and if ur doing it in your garage then get a fan to take out all of the fumes from your garage. after you have scuffed you paint you can paint. wat you need to do before you paint is get wax and grease remover and take a rag and wipe the whole car. then use a tack rag and wipe the car down. you can paint your car after that. (dont forget to tape windows). first your goign to want to spray a sealer (go to auto body store and buy "montana sealer set up" you will get a catalyst and sealer cans. those mix 1:1 and you just spray one coat of it on you car. then clean your gun and wait 10 minutes and you can spray the basecoat (color) on. you want to have the gun at about 25 psi and put about 3-4 coats on with about a 10 flash time between coats. use about 50% overlap when spraying. after that clean you gun and you can now spray clear coat (the stuff that makes it shiny). spray about 3-4 coats. about 50% overlapping. do not spray clear coat wet. spray it on dry so that it doesnt run. thats about it. im sure i left out some other things. heres a list of things to get
wax and grease remover
lots and lots of paper towels
1 tack rag
ask your local auto body store which paint and clear that would be right for you.
i hope this has helped for you. i have painted about 3 cars and a bunch of parts for random cars. so i kinda know what im doing.

if anything take it to a body shop. wat ever you do DO NO GO TO MAACO. you can do a better job then them. if your doing it then buy a piece of sheet metal and practice painting on that. you will probably have runs in you paint but you can fix those with wet sanding and buffing.

To no offence, I am the same way. Painting is a long time practice. Your first paint jobs will never turn out. A lot of it is trial and error, what paint base mixes with what paint, and what clearcoat will stick to the paint. I would get the job done professionally if you want it to last any length of time and have it look good. I am an automotive apprentice and I have sent a few cars out to autobody shops for work to get done. Body work and painting is a long term schooling process. It is not somthing that can be read about and picked up on on a days worht of reading. I wish I knew how to paint, it would make my life easier, but I don't so I pay someone who does to do the job correctly.

Really, your best bet is to grab some auto magazines(HotRod and such) or autobody books from the library and read them. Understand what you can do and what your options are(there are so many) It can be a costly activity which you can screw up, and then have trouble getting out of it to have something half assed looking.. Look at it as getting a permanent tatoo. You don't want just any old picture. You want something special and done right, right?

Well, I'm a guitarist, but the drummer in my band had his Screenprinted because he knows a guy that screenprints, It came out pretty good...but as far as paint goes, I'd say just Arcryllic (the kind that people use on canvas') It's usually not too much money and you could get it at Michael's and AC Moore...or any craft store, basically.

You'll be much better off leaving this to the professionals with the right equipment and facilities ... Maybe your local body shop or Maaco. A homemade paint job will look homemade ... yuk !!
