In general, you look for good earnings increase year over year, quarter over quarter (4Q06 vs 4Q05 for example), good sales increase, an uptrending stock.

Also, look for how analysts rate the stock, and how "big" money is investing (or not) into the company.

These will give you a head start when looking at fundamentals for a company.

How to Make money in Stocks, by William O'Neill can give you an excellent primer as well. It's widely available, new and used.
