In Islamic countries, is it socially taboo for a woman to divorce her husband?

Yes a woman is considered socially taboo-not only in islamic countries,but in many non islamic countries.This is not a religious issue however,more of an ignorance thing. On a religious scale,it is very much allowed for a woman to ask for what is known as a 'khulla' or the permission for a divorce.Divorce,islamically should be a last resort(for both parties) and is what true muslims believe to be an act which is very much disliked by Allah.This is one of the reasons why a muslim should be familiar with the partner he/she is to marry.to avoid future problems.

Depends on the country. It's only the media and people of a certain political persuasion that thinks that "Islam" is a single thing. Islam actually gave women the right to divorce centuries before any government in the West.

If a woman have valid reason to demand for divorce, she can. She can just got to court of shariah and explain the reason. In most cases she may have to retrun back full or part of mehr (dowry given to her at the time of marriage contract). This is not just theory, this is already practice, and for the same reason divorce rate is going up in Islamic countries. However, she cannot give divorce unilaterally as husbands can. In Islam husbands have right to divorce his wife without going to court. As per impression of most of the answerers, that woman in Islamic countries are opperessed badly is just an impression without any truth. Hijab or freedom from making a career can be seen as an source of oppression for americans, but for them its freedom. Husband have to make living for her in all respect.

I have a co-worker from India. She divorced her husband and has now been banded from her family for over 12 years. I believe it is true from the many woman I have come in contact with. I can't say for sure if its ture, but all of these woman couldn't have gone through the same thing and be lying.

Dude you need to open your eyes. There are Islamic leaders trained in Saudia Arabia and Iran coming to Mosques in europe and America.

They are telling people to ignore "the nations laws if they contradict Islam, to fight to make the nation an Islamic state"

I have seen them saying quote "women are deficient" Islam teaches sexism and babrbarity towards women.

I have been told by Muslims from Iran and Afghanistan that they have seen women dragged into the street, stoned to death and skinned alive in front of children for "adultery" Divorce most are afraid to leave the house.

certain, that is authentic yet women human beings can specify contained in the marriage contract to divorce comfortable. God made effective that Islam might want to in good structure with all cases. Of course. In those countries women can not even show their faces, let alone have a voice,so of course they can not it would bring shame on the family and probably get the woman killed.
