As far as my understanding goes, a jacket is a big, warm coat like thing to wear when it is really cold, whereas a sweater is more like a jersy that you slip on over your head.

Both top wear are intended to keep the wearer comfortable from cold climate. The jacket is usually thicker in material with up to three layers. The inside lining, padding material and the outside cloth which is usually water proof. Jacket is designed for outdoor wear. On the other hand, a sweater is usually worn as a second cloth, no fancy material or accessory, can be worn even at home.

A jacket is something you wear in the winter. A sweater is something that is thinner and usually made of a softer material. Normally you would wear a sweater and then a jacket on top.

A jacket is made of pre-woven material that is cut into proper shape. A sweater starts with yarn and is knitted or crocheted.

A sweater is often dressier. A jacket is normally made to withstand the elements, so it could be worn outside in bad weather.

I would only call something a sweater if it was made of yarn and was knitted or crocheted. Other than that, I can't think of any definite difference.
