we got 15 or 20 minutes in the morning and afternoon and 1/2 hour after lunch. Where we are now..the kids only get 1/2 hour at lunch recess and is sometimes taken away as discipline. I think this is a mistake. children have endless energy to burn off and are not designed to sit endless hours at a desk without breaks.

I was in elementary in the early 2000's (lol, how do you say that? - basically, I'm a freshman in highschool...) Anyways, the recess was 15 min in the morning & afternoon, and half hour at lunch, but it seemed like they cut out either the morning or afternoon recess by the time I was in sixth grade.
I would bet that they're cutting down because schools are trying to force every bit of knowledge they can into the kids to meet the dumb standardized tests. It's also probably the whole 'bullying' thing that schools might see as being fixed by limiting free time for kids. I don't know... But it is kinda dumb, though. No wonder everyone says kids are growing up too fast today... there's no time to be a kid!!

I remember recess was abt 20 min 2x a day. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Then again that was 20 years ago, so I could be a little fuzzy on the actual time. :-)

it was 45 minutes long until 4th grade, then 30 minutes until 5th grade and then by time we got to sixth grade we got to have 10 minute break with the jr. high/high school students. K-12 was on one campus(not the same building).

I don't recall recess times to much. I was busy catching lizards and putting them in milk cartons. I worked alone as a lonely boy.

Yep, seems like it lasted forever.
Kids today just don't appreciate getting beaten to a pulp anymore.
