i.e. should they be grateful they have been tolerated because they are really unpleasant or should they set a higher value on themselves and not tolerate being merely 'tolerated'? What do you believe is right?

There is a big difference between being tolerated and being respected. If you are respected you will feel comfortable in your weakness, you will feel equal in your greatness and have a sense of belonging with the group so to speak. Being tolerated is no more different than watching your neighbors dog take a poopie in your yard but saying nothing to keep the peace. If you are only tolerated your opinion doesnt really matter and your life has just a general value and not a soul. I wouldnt want to be tolerated just because someone felt they had to be nice to me. Did your mom ever make you kiss your sister or shake hands and be nice to your brother? It sucked and you probably ended up resenting them. Same difference. I personally would not put up with just being put up with. I want to earn the respect of my fellow man and feel worthy of my own existence. You can only make some of the people happy some of the time. Work on being a good human being and the rest is sure to follow.

Well, if I'm merely "tolerated" by another, I suppose I could condencent to "tolerate" them as well. I am however tempted to ask, why should we merely tolerate one another when we can trully accept each other for what we are and enjoy life with variety!

What value we place on ourselves is meaningless if not agreed to by those around us. It is like saying my house is worth a king's ransom by having the estate agents laugh behind your back! Mind you, they will still pull a straight face in front of you, "tolerating" you until you come to your senses!

Do we really want that? Two facing each other all the time and be grateful people are doing that do us?

As an interim, that's not bad... but surely we should mature beyond mere tolerence of each other and embrace our difference with a goodwill of acceptence instead.

If you tolerate people whos behaviour is socially unacceptable you are basically letting it happen.

This is the way I see it if someone is doing something you don't agree with but is causing no harm to others or just themselves. Then let them do it it's their choice.

If they are chosing to sexually assault a child don't tolerate it smash them over the back of the head with a nice solid bat.

Do you get the idea?

Daft potheads smoking a spliff round some back alley = Tolerable.

Sexual assault, Racism etc = intolerable.

Whether they respect it or not isn't relevant here what is relevant is that people are free to do what they want as long as they don't harm others.

It depends on why they're being tolerated. If they know that they are acting in a way that most people would find objectionable, then they should be grateful. If they are just being themselves and doing nothing wrong, then no, but you can't force someone to like you.

i think you should show respect at all times, i was brought up to believe in respecting your elders, but i know it is hard to do this sometimes as others just treat you really bad so thats how you want to treat them, and sometimes thats what i do but then i spend hours worrying over it, so even though i beleive you should tolerate people who have tolerated you i dont always do this, so maybe this is a double standard, but i believe you should try to do it, no matter how hard it is. hope this helps

"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

The problems we see from religious folk is the difficulty they have accomplishing both of those at the same time. It is only possible with the Holy Spirit.
