$1000 for 60 days vacation? well that is not quite $17 a day, so if you are traveling, plan on camping out or staying with friends.

if you drive, and you get 20 miles per gallon on your car, you can drive for 2 1/2 hrs per day at 55 mph and get 137 miles per day away from your house. 55mph * 2.5hrs = 137 miles per day 137 miles / 20 miles per gallon = 6.85 gallons of gas there for 6.85 gallons of gas *$2.00 per gallon = $13.70 per day for gas.

that leaves you with $3.30 a day for food. if you camp out that will buy more food than if you go to mcdonalds.

i would not recommend driving to california. the numbers are against you. perhaps a bus might be better.

i would imagine it would take about 48 hrs to ride a bus from new york to california since it takes 24 hrs from oklahoma to las vegas. if you lived on the beach and caught a fish every day to cook and eat.this may be a do-able option.

if you live in nyc and really want to get away for 2 months on $1000 i would recommend finding the closest campground away from the city , cooking all of your meals there, and enjoying the quietness of getting out of the city.

another option is to find friends to go with you and share expenses. this way you may be able to eat mc donalds once or twice a week.

the third option is find 30 friends outside of the city but still in new york and spend two days each at their houses. (by the third day they will be glad to see you go.)

forth option plan a shorter trip say, one week. you will be able to spend more per day just make sure you have enough money to eat on when you get back to your home.

all this may look bleak, but you can enjoy your vacation if you set your mind to it. you may not make it to california on $1000 but you can still enjoy a few days out of the city.

stay away from the West Coast or the East coast as these places are very expensive.
Stay away from resorts like Disneyworld..same reason
if you were going to CA why don't you go south of the border and find a place on the Gulf of Mexico that is not a touris trap.
You will have to investigate travel agencys or better yet if you know of people who have been there.
There is a lot of countries you could go to but the travel expense would take most of your money. If I was you I would just stay home and rent movies and swim at the YMCA. Thats what I do now.

Just a few concepts, assuming you're young, healthy, and adventurous, and strong enough to protect yourself.

1.) good sleeping bag & tent and knowlege of camping.

2.) know where all youth hostles are located along any given area of operation.

3.) Meet lots of interesting people as you go along--- they may give you more destination ideas than you'll get from this forum.

4.) Keep a journal. You'll be glad when you read it in the future.

5.) Have a great adventure. No matter where it leads you.

PS: I did CA to Fairbanks and back on $350 in the early 70's and don't regret any of the discomforts. Prices are higher now, but, hey, keep a good enough journal and you can find an adventure anywhere, anyplace, anytime --- even your own backyard. Happy trails.

I believe it was Kurt Vonnegut who said that traveling is dancing lessons from God....

A $1,000 wouldn't get me to the airport and back.

A cheap round-trip ticket from NY to LA is at least $500, cabs, food, rental car, hotel, and you'll pop that grand in 48hrs.

$1,000 for two months wont even cover my rent. You better have some more money saved up.
