The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1630 by a group of Englishmen known as the Puritans, who were upset that the Church of England was too Catholic in its beliefs and practices; their goal was to "purify" the Church by removing its Catholic characteristics, and to do this they decided to settle in the New World to start afresh. Securing a charter from the crown (something the Separatist Pilgrims failed to do ten years earlier in establishing the Plymouth colony), they formed the Massachusetts Bay Company and set said for America, establishing their little theocracy in the same area as Plymouth, which they eventually absorbed (within about 10 to 20 years, I think.) The purpose, as I stated, was to "purify" the Church of England; religious freedom was by no mans part of the agenda, because the Puritans immediately set about enforcing their idea on the inhabitants, a policy which ultimately led to the establishment of sister colonies in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
