French, by a long shot. Although I greatly enjoy the occasional rich Italian red wines, French wines have that vigor, strength and sharp taste that I like. Their cheeses seem to be just that slight bit better, and the culture (once you get around and learn a little more about it) is extraordinarily pleasant, as reflected by the people in general. Fashion statements don't really matter to me, though. Fashion just doesn't define either country enough.
Italy is a good place to be, but France is better by a few scores.

Food: I like both, but I like Italian food a but better than French because I feel that Italian food is not that heavy compared to French food. French food is good, but I just feel that French food is a little heavier because the French like to use a lot butter to cook.
Wine: I would say Frebch because I never tried Italian wine before, although my father ever told me that Italian wines sometimes make his throat gets dry. Portuguese wine is also pretty good, I like the sweet taste of the Portuguese wine.
Art: Both are good, I like Italian sculptures, paintings, and carvings. Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci are my favorite Italian artists. I also like French lace works, paintings, and crystal works. Claude Monet and Renoir are my favorite French painters, although Matisse is also pretty good. Baccarat is my favorite French Crystal works brand.
Fashion: Both are good, but I find Italian fashion to be more vibrant while French fashion tend to be a bit more conservative and subtle.
Cheese: Sorry, I am not a big fan of cheese because I cannot stand the smell and I am allergic to cheese (I always end up vomiting if I eat cheese)

When it comes to wine it really comes down to taste. Both can make good or bad wines. I don't like that the French make their wine in metal barrels. I like an oaky full bodied wine myself.
I'd pick France maybe overall. Italian food is great but a lot of it is the same and also fattening. Italian women can be hot but too hairy and difficult (OONY GOO GOO!)

Depends. The French have better wine, but the Italians have better food. As for art...While they both had good classical artists, the modern French artists are better.

Since you include "no France bashing" as a prerequisite, you already know the answer, and I will beat a hasty retreat.
