Both.

One can always give up at the hint of failure and unexpected or undesired consequences but that's too easy. It's far too easy to walk away with your head down and tail between your legs.
But it takes strength to use consequences as a motivator for success.

There is always a lesson to be learned.

As Thomas Edison once said:

"I haven't failed. I've just found 1000 ways not to make a lightbulb."

They are simply "effects." You do A.... then B happens. If you do C... then be prepared for the effect of D.

How you view B and D..... is seriously up to each and every person. It's kind of like the "is the cup half empty or half full" thing.

Those that maintain a positive outlook view the consequences as motivators, while those that have a more negative outlook, see them as reminders of their failure.

I don't think there is any one best answer for this. They are both...... depending on your outlook on life.

Depends on the mindset and hopes of the one who establishes the consequences. In most cases they are manipulated in form and given a diplomatic spin to sound like a motivator - but anyone who actually has to deal with them will say they do nothing but make them think about what they've done wrong.

Or more precisely, "how in the hell did I end up doing this?"

Being the optimist that I am, I agree they're reminders of your failures that are SUPPOSED TO motivate you toward better things.

Reminders of failure for me! I don't need negative consequences to be motivated.

A person's fear of failure can motivate them to them incredible things, but at the same time it will only motivate to mediocrity. Because you will only try hard enough to get by, to be safe again and free from fear. But to truly succeed you know the risks and accept them. For a person who plays to "not be last" then its both a reminder and a motivator, but a person who plays to "win" its neither.

consequences are niether. they are the end result of cause and effect whether positive or negative. I beleive you playing a trick to find the optimists and pessimists in yahoo answers. As you can see I am neither. I am an objectivitist.

well...I guess that it would depend if you are an optimistic or pessimistic person..... I'm a pretty happy person so I would have to say a consequence would be a motivator for me...
