The Attorney General (Alberto Gonzalez) was the designated survivor for this years State of the Union address. This means that with all the high ranking government officials in one place the Govt hold back on member of each part from the House and Senate as well as the Attorney General in case of a catastrophe. This practice became prevalent in the days of the Cold War in fear of a nuclear attack.

I don't know about this State of the Union, (I didn't watch) but I believe it is tradtionally a low ranking member and the postion rotates.

I remember hearing Ronald Reagan's Secretary of Labor tell a funny story about when he got the phone call informing him that he would not be going to the 1984 inaguration or any of the inaguration events, but would instead be spending the weekend in a secure compound under a mountian somewhere. He said it was put to him in a "good news/bad news" sort of way. The bad news was he was going to miss all the fun. When he asked what the good news was he was told that this meant he had an outside chance of becoming President.

Anthony Gonzales, the Attorney General. One member of the cabinet always stays away, so that if there is a major cataclysm - like the people rising up and lynching the administration, someone will survive.
