Recently in California, they announced plans to introduce legislation that would make it illegal for parents to spank their own children under the age of 4. If you were convicted you could face up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine. What are your views about this?

I think that by letting your children be immune to any threat of disciplinary behavior is not only a great way to have an entire Country filled with Pauly Shores, but also a real recipe for making us into a Country filled with the biggest group of sniveling ******* on the planet!
We might live in a relatively peaceful time, but I would much prefer to think we would try to instill a sense of real life survival into our children just in case the World changes and our pussified brats have to one day protect us from children growing up in reality like they are currently doing in Iraq!

Plus, If we are responsible for the behavior of our children as they mature, I want them to fully understand the potential repercussions arrogant and irresponsible behavior will bring!

As far as I am concerned, if we brought them in, we should have the RIGHT to take them out!

Nothing I hate more than irresponsible Parents who do not discipline their children and then society has to wind up doing it later!

Would your Dog ever stop Pooping in your house if you never spanked it?
Bear in Mind, Spanking, not Beating and abusing!

---The ones promoting this insanity and invasion of the Family unit, are the Social workers, who would love to tell every family what to do 24/7! It's their Job, their Industry and they are self perpetuating-like their partners in crime-Lawyers!

I think it's rediculous. Sure there are people that abuse the right to 'discipline' their child. I heard a woman spanking her child in a laudromat bathroom one time. The child was screaming bloody murder and the woman wouldn't stop. It really made me sick, but I was young at the time and didn't do anything about it. It is for this reason, I think that spanking should be outlawed. But then, an abusive parent is going to abuse their kid. There are more ways to hurt your child than spanking them.
So the more I think about it, the more I realise that sometimes, spanking is necessary for the well-being of the child. What if a young child who doesn't know any better is reaching for a hot stove? You're going to slap their hand away in the moment and then *later* tell them why you did that.
I grew up in a household where violence, of any kind, was *never* allowed. My 3 year old brother was spanked once when he seriously disobeyed my mother's rules after repeated warnings and privelege restrictions. He never did it again. My mother used her discretion and decided when it was necessary to spank my brother. And she made the right choice. Sure, we can't trust everyone's discresion. But we don't have much choice. We trust everyone or we trust no one. And what makes America wonderful is that we do trust everyone. We trust our people when we let them drive, putting countless others in danger. We trust our people when we lend them our money. We trust our people when we let them buy guns. We trust our people when we let them publish their own newspapers.
We can't stop trusting them now just because we feel like it.

In short, no. Spanking your child should NOT be illegal.

This is just another attempt by the Satanic liberal crowd to try to cram their views down my throat. More government where it is unnecessary.

Now a reasonable parent would agree that spanking a child under 4 is hardly necessary most of the time but that when it is needed to get the child to obey the spanking that is necessary to gain compliance is very minimal. I'm sure there are some nuts who have kids and beat them. But why should big government liberals cram their values down my throat because someone else abused their kid(s)?

This is ridiculous. What we need is a Parent's Bill of Rights. It's the parent(s) responsibility (not government) to discipline their own kids. Sure there will be sad stories. Such is the case with humanity throughout history.

But government doesn't care. They only want taxes and more power and this is proven when you look at this proposed law or any law. $1,000 fine.

Spanking in and of itself is not bad, but going overboard is. It's not an all or nothing thing, just like drinking one beer doesn't make you an alcoholic.
Age has nothing to do with it, either. That's like saying it's not OK to spank your child when they are 4, but once they hit 5, you can beat them all you want. Makes NO sense.
Children in general need discipline, not to say that spanking is the only way, but parents need to have that option. Some kids don't respond to anything else, and I'm sure we've all seen examples of bratty teenagers whos' parents were afraid to discipline them.

It shouldn't be illegal as defined by the proposed legislation.
I wonder if they have any hard data or research that would confirm the need for such a law.

Of course, spanking that leaves lasting marks/bruises and/or causes physical injury is already illegal since it falls under the definition of child abuse.

It's not illegal for a child to be spanked by his or her own parents or guardians. But if you are just his aunt, not his guardian, and his parents don't give you permission, then you can't spank him yourself.

Should not happen. A tap on the hand never hurt anyone. There is a complete lack of discipline everywhere. No wonder the children of today think that they can do whatever they like. They can get away with anything and there will never be any proper punishment. We all need boundaries.

yes it should because some people take advantage of being able to hit their children . babies should not be mistreated because they're mind is barely starting to function at the age of 3. it is sad the amount of people in the world that are selfish and abusive.look at the people above me , they don't think children as a new way of life we need to support. this causes for the kids to become killers, suicidal, and even kill their own family. i think they should pass it because look how many people throughout the u.s. beat their children, just because their parents did it to them doesn't mean they have to take it out on their children. if parents feel they need to abuse their children by hitting or yelling at them then they are not doing a good job of being an educative parent . it all depends on the guardian the way the childs mind works.

It’s a ridiculous infringement of parental rights, and the chances of it becoming a law are INCREDIBLY slim.
