I have been to many countries in the world and they all say that AMERICA IS A CONTINENT not a nation. There are many countries in AMERICA, including Canada, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and many more and they are all AMERICANS. Our great pride made us the most stupid people in the world and they all laugh at us.

I've spent a lot of time in Europe and Asia and I understand what you are saying but I don't think it is anymore than jealousy. Our ancestors got on the boat, made the trip and made themselves a better life. America is not a continent.... South America and North America are continents. We are part of North America, so we are AMERICANS. The only stupid people here are the people who with all the war and terror going on, have nothing better to do than point fingers and call names.

We are smart enough to know that the continents are called North America and South America.. two separate continents, not one big one called America. America in general is short for the United States of America.

Because our country is called "The United States of America", no other country in the Americas uses the name "America" in their country.

Technically you are correct but it's just convenient and accepted to refer to United States' citizens as "Americans".

Your knowledge of geography is correct but the term "America" is a shortened form of "The United States of America". Hence, people from The United States of America are American. Also, the term for "American" in Spanish is Americano(a), and French Americain. This term is accepted worldwide. So to call a person from the U.S. "American" is correct (politically and socially) even if it is not entirely correct geographically speaking.

Well, you've made a very good point there, but I've always wondered what other people would call us (other than calling us Americans). Anybody for United Statsieans?

I haven't called myslef an american since I was 6, when I publically renounced it by refusing to say the pledge of allegiance in school. When I traveled I never told any one where I was from, if anything I told them I was Canadian, or sometimes I put on my best Irish brogue and left it at that. I may have to live in the united states, but I will NEVER call myself an american.

Why do we call ourselves Americans and not United Stateean. Calling ourselves that can mean that we are North and South American and it does not specify where we really live.
