To install the Vista Upgrade version you
1) Must install and activate your previous operating system before you can reinstall the Vista upgrade.
Windows Vista Upgrade Version only permits an actual upgrade from a genuine Windows XP / 2000 installation. It will not permit booting from the DVD and using a Windows XP/2000 CD to qualify for a clean install.
With the Upgrade Version of Windows Vista, upgrade literally means "upgrade".
2) can not install dual boot since your previous OS is no longer valid once the upgrade version is installed.
You paid a reduced price for the upgrade BECAUSE you agreed to fold your XP
license into the Vista purchase. You no longer have a separate XP license.

If you want to wipe hard drive completely clean, you have to low level format it. You can go to the manufactor website for your hard drive, and find the program you need to low level format, i wouldn't get vista right away i would want until the fix the bugs out of it.

Copy off your data files. Make note of the devices that you will need drivers for. You can re-install what you already have. If that does not fix it, you may have some hardware problems that Vista will not fix either.
