My roommate has his TV on and there is an Australian Open going on. One of the players are grunting when they hit the ball. I find that quite annoying. Sure I could close my door, but that won't stop my curiosity.

Actually, grunting is an excellent way of expending energy when you hit the ball. When you grunt, you let go of the excess waste from your lungs, allowing you to add more pace to the ball. Take this example: a car with a bigger exhaust pipe will go faster than a car with a smaller or plugged exhaust pipe. It's also a great method of intimidating (and annoying) your opponent. Just don't make it too loud.

It's very annoying but curious to find out.
Maybe cus they want to attract other's attention(show off)
or just simply it takes a lot of energy to hit the tennis ball going over 100 km per hour

it is suppose to help with breathing some say anyway.
i only grunt when im well into the second or third set and am feeling exhausted. when u have been playing for hours and still have to play every point hard its hard not to grunt!

To breath out, it helps to get more power, you feel more your shot.
I was tought to grunt, but I think players as Sharapova, overdo it. It is too loud!!!!!!!!!!!

it does get a bit annoying lol, but i guess that is what it takes to hit the ball as hard as they do.

because it takes immense force to make that ball tear across the court like they do. just watch it now - you can barely see it. and that solid "PAWMP" sound is them hitting the sweetspot of the racket every time. it's really amazing...but i can see how it gets on your nerves.

Bugs me also! I think they do it for show, to scare their opponent with how much power they have, or how hard they are trying.
