It all comes down to the reason behind the lie.

If you are asked by someone you care for whether the "outfit they are wearing makes them look fat", and in actuality, it does, are you going to tell them that, or are you going to say, "No, it looks fine"?

You will tell the lie, because of the following:
1) no one is hurt by it
2) you are showing that the feelings of the other person matters to you

However, if the question is "have you cheated?", and you have, but you say NO, then that is a hurtful lie.

Can you see the distinction?

Well, consider this situation...

A wife asks her husband "am I fat" -- clearly, she is 350 pounds, but the husband says "no honey, you're not fat... you look great". Reverse that situation..... He says, "of course you're fat, the scale and BMI charts don't lie". Now, he's thrown out of the house, his stuff is on the front lawn and there's pending divorce papers. Maybe a little white lie would have been better in that situation.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe lying is a "good" thing to do-- however, I do believe in certain situations, you can prevent hurt feelings and a long drawn-out conflict. I, on the other hand, prefer the truth, especially from my husband.

I believe the only time lying can be a good thing is if it within God's will and to save lives.

To fellow Christians - Before you respond, please read the story of Rahab and how she LIED about the two spies. Joshua 2:1-10

Also, read Corrie ten Boom's story about how she LIED to save the lives of many Jews she hid during the Holocaust.

God's will be done.

Lying is a TOOL... To be used carefully and judiciously.

For example, a criminal breaks into my home brandishing a gun and asks "where is your child... I want to kill her."

You better believe I'm gonna lie.
