I thought it was an engaging, thoughtful and harshly attractive film to watch. Brad Pitt was jagged and almost the character he portrayed rather than the media star that he is; plus the use of unknown actors and local languages / subtitles proved a brave move for a mainstream movie.
Much of the criticism of the movie that I've read rightly points at the 'Tokyo story' which somehow feels a bit dis-jointed, although it does tie the film together nicely and is required. I've also read that it follows too closely in the footsteps of 'Crash', another film to use a tableau of stories to draw you through the film narrative. Although, Traffic preceded Crash and successfully did the same as have other films before that.
Overall, it's far beyond the usual Holywood fare, offers an interesting visual sweep of Afghanistan and tries in some part to humanise a society that is often dis-regarded as lost or solely tied to conflict and suffering.
I'd recommend it.

Well Crash had a lot of critics who disliked it and it still won best pic at the Oscars. It cos well critics don't vote for either Golden Globes and Oscars, and their opinion can be very different than the one from the voters in those awards.

It's a complex movie that follows the storylines of loosely connected people all over the globe...in many languages, hence the title. Critics tend to recommend what they think their readers/viewers will enjoy, and a lot of people don't enjoy subtitles and possible confusion. The reason it is being honored is despite its complexity, it is an amazing film!

I actually have very ambivalent emotions about this movie. I loved some issues about it: the diverse seems of the tale, each and every of the languages... yet i did not really a lot, i imagine the memories are tied in a exceptionally synthetic way, and it become very depressing (it did not coach the wish the director talks about). perhaps i want to attend a at the same time as and word it lower back... yet really a lengthy time period

Babel is a movie thats pretty much outside of the box and also has a foreign director. < http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0449467/ > site with more info about it, it got rated 7.8/ 10 real high rating. i saw it and thought it was great, showed a lot about human connection and interaction. If your expecting action adventure this probly isnt for you, if your into psychological movies then this is more like your movie.
PS dont listen to critics they want to dictate what you should watch and what you shouldnt

Your comments are interesting, in the fact that most critics I read liked Babel, which encouraged me to see it. After having seen it, I would like to sue the guys who thought this turkey was good. If you want to spend your time watching a film about political correctness, see this one.
