Today in my science class I asked my friend who is black, if black people can get tan, and then everyone was calling me racist. How is that racist? I wasn't trying to be racist, I just was really curious. I said I was sorry, but I don't think he believed me because we are always joking around, and now I feel kind of bad. Do you think that was racist to ask?

No, not at all! I just think it was a naive question, but everyone is intended to ask those once in a while, I am a very light skinned black girl and YES!!! I do tan, (I've been told rather nicely, I might add) Yes even darker black people tan, you just may not notice it. Sometimes people can be a lil touchy, just be careful the next time you ask questions like that, ok hun. <3

i can see why people would say that since most people know that they don't get tan and if they do you can't tell but i wouldn't say it is. you were just curious so you asked a question without realizing how it might have sounded to other people. your friend was probably a little offended by it but I'm sure in a couple days he will be over it and forgive you. if he is a true friend (which I'm sure he is otherwise you probably wouldn't hang out with him) he will understand that you didn't mean to sound racist even if you did.

I dont think that was racist. Black skin will tan but you probably wont see it but they are as much at risk for skin cancer then a white person. I dont see anything wrong with your question. You just wanted to know and asking is the way to get answers.

Yes, it was a minor racist comment, because you are making a point of his skin color. When you talk to someone and say something that calls attention to his color, there is reason to be offended. Do you ask your white friends if they like Twinkies because they are white? It might be the only thing you say to him and it calls attention to the differences between you.
Yes, they get darker in the sun.

I don't think so. I have a friend who is black and one day she asked if I wanted to go to the lake and I said sure and she told me she needed to work on her tan. I was taken aback and said I didn't know black people got tans. She just laughed and said that white folks think they're the only ones who can do anything. She didn't get mad or anything and I hope you're friend is not upset either. Tell this story and maybe he'll ease up.

I don't think that was racist at all. At least not in the context you put it. You will find in life that some people are very over sensitive about what they are self concious about.
Don't worry, you are not a racist.

listen, in today's society you cant even breathe the wrong way, I understand your curiosity, some how it's okay to ask sex questions but race, religion, those are of the table. Just apologize again, explain you didn't mean it that way. maybe he took it out of whack because of the other kids around him, so do it privately

Nope it was just a silly thing to ask. Yes they can tan and burn just like everyone can. Just ignore it. If he or she brings it up tomorrow tell them you didn't mean anything by it.

No it is not racist, but dark skinned people in general can get darker and are susceptible to sun burn and skin cancer.
