Microsoft, in its all-know quest for profits, intentionally stripped most of the networking features (such as joining a Windows Domain or using Active Directory) from Windows XP Home to force people to buy the more expensive Windows XP Professional. As for Vista, it would largely depend on which of the four versions of Windows Vista they'll be sending you. If you they send you either the Business or Ultimate versions then yes, that should fix the problem of connecting, but will create many other problems. Either of the Home versions of Vista will have the same problems as XP Home.

I have heard that XP Home is not network friendly. I don't have it, but that's what I have read. Don't know anything about Vista, but I would think it would work.

Home ed. has no ability to join a domain - which is probably what your work place has.
The only way this would work is to have some type of VPN - there are free ones out there.

One of them is: Tight VNC http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html
