Try moccasins if you really are insistent about shoes. They are soft and defeat the toe curling trick. They also allow the kids feet to form more normally instead of being confined in rigid shoes.

Did he let you put them on when you 1st got them? Is he this way with every pair of shoes? I am curious if he is curling his toes just cause he don't want them on or cause they hurt. If he has thick feet try a place that specializes in baby shoes like stride rite. I had to buy my son shoes from stride rite. His feet are fat and the cheap shoes just didn't fit. I went for Nike's and they are made very thin and his feet are just way to big. I also found that when he started walking that the stride rite shoes were the best. When I got shoes from wal-mart he wouldn't walk much and when he did he walked like he had clown feet. The cheap shoes don't bend very well. I know it sucks to pay the price for them but it really helped my son get used to shoes because they fit good and didn't hurt his fat feet. Good luck.

Try the soft shoes or slippers if you can find them in his size. At least then there's something on his feet to keep them warm, and he can get used to the idea of something on his feet. They try shoes again periodically. Whatever you do, don't force them on though, I know someone who's boyfriend forced the shoe on her son's foot and ended up breaking the kid's ankle. Not a likely thing to happen, but if you're forcing something, you never know how you can hurt a child without trying to.

My daughter HATED to put shoes on, always did the same thing. She even screamed as soon as we went into the shoe store. I did find that she has a wide foot, so I get her the wide size shoe. Also, she seems to really like wearing sneakers. She stopped curling her toes when I bought her a pair of sneakers in the wide size. She was 13 months at that point :)
Good luck :)

Just keep trying - it's definitely an acquired skill to get shoes on those pudgy little baby feet! Shoes with laces that you can loosen (a LOT) and open wide are easiest. You might try lightly stroking the sole of his foot (toward the instep) with your finger - babies will generally spread out their toes when you do this, although he may have outgrown this by ten months. If not, maybe it would make it easier to squeeze that little shoe on...
Best of luck to you! I remember very well how frustrating it was not to be able to master something that *seemed* so simple!!

My daughter did this. So I had to buy her "crib shoes" but her feet were always tiny and still are. If he is curling his toes this is what I did to her. I unlaced the shoe the best I could put her feet in the shoe slipped my finger in under her toes and pushed them up. She never got to wear the cute little boots because I was unable to get my fingers in to uncurl her toes.

My mom taught me a trick to this... if you run your fingernail up the sole of his foot he will spread his toes in a flex position... for a minute. Get them on fast. You might also try to make a game out of it. But in all reality I wouldn't let him walk on the general public floors.. and anywhere else that I would put him down I would make sure was clean. I am just weird like that though. Clean enough that if he crawls around and walks barefoot it wouldn't hurt anything.

Sounds mean but will not hurt...press your thumb into the top of his foot not hard & insert into the shoe keep your finger there as long as possible, he wont be able to curl his toes.

If he is giving you that much trouble let him walk around barefoot for a day - even with the cold weather (just watch to make sure he is ok) but after he is uncomfortable he will WANT to put those shoes on.

tickle his foot a little then when his foot is flexed slide it on, or when you get his foot in the shoes a little kind of stand him up and if he straightens his foot out you can slide it on. but you might need help with the second one. mom of 3
