i have a 97 dodge truck it wont start i have checked everything on it starter is good but there is a switch on the side of the transmission with 3 wires that snap on the switch it wont snap back in place what is this switch called

Without seeing it it is hard to be sure, but it sounds like the neutral safety switch!! If that is disconnected, the starter will not work!

the 3 wires i think are for the back up lights, and elect, over drive,
take a 12 volt miter and check for power on the starter make sure that the key is set to on, see if there's any power, I think
its one of two things in line fuse or the icn. switch

that switch is for shift points. it will not affect turning on your truck
have you checked your battery, battery cables, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel level, spark, injectors, ignition, and so on. my point is that it could be one of many problems, maybe something you didnt check or missed. make sure theres no sugar around your gas cap, or a bananna in the tailpipe...
...ask a mechanic to check your flux capacitor
