Nope. In Japan, a lot anime is targeted towards a teen/young adult+ crowd, but in the U.S. we've been brainwashed by cartoons like Tom and Jerry- juvenile, dumbed-down, for children.

When I was a kid... American cartoons bored the heck out of me!

American cartoons were just, Good Guys vs. Bad guys. That's it. Good Guys always win. Bleh... predictable... stale... boring...

Then came anime and in anime, good guys die. Good guys suffer. Good guys turn into bad guys and bad guys turn good. Near the end of an american cartoon or series, you know there's going to be a happy ending. Kinda like a tv sitcom and they work all their problems out within 30 minutes.

But near the end of an anime, you have no idea what's going to happen. I've seen some animes where the ending was just the hero giving up completely... lol

Then there's animes where the hero dies of a very heroic death... but then afterwards everybody is like... um... What do we do now? lol

And I roared the first time I saw an anime in which the world came to an end. I was kinda excited and angry at the same time. Felt like I had been fooled. You're hoping there's going to be another episode... just one last episode... nope... game over.

___

And the anime characters are more realistic than the american cartoon characters. More complicated. This is why I preferred anime as a kid.

As far as movies go yes. I'd prefer a movies like Perfect Blue or Vampire Hunter D over whatever latest computer animated thing is coming out here in the states. I haven't been to impressed with the latest in anime tv though. Myabe I should look in other places besides cartoon network. Who knows?

american cartoons with a few exceptions (futurama, simpsons, family guy e.t.c) have a target age of young, pre-pubescent or on the edge, this means that the level of intellegence, plot intricacy and character development is often not very high. Anime tends to be more subversive in its content, ranging from horror to comedy to serious drama. The japanese treat it as an art medium and if you've ever seen a studio Ghibli production you'd understand the difference in artestry and detail.

American cartoons are dead. Everyone has switched to 3d film production.... Anime covers a much broader range shows for little kids all the way up to adults your talking apples and oranges. I like both I even do some QC and distro for anime some are awesome some suck same goes for cartoons
what I don't like is the big manga and anime houses are closed to non Japanese animators like me...but they can come here and work on our stuff...sucks to be an Kyokugaisha.

Because anime has a broader storyline that american cartoons do. Most american cartoons usually have no storyline, having two animals fight, or having the main character get in trouble and then learn a lesson about it afterwards.

Yes because it's way better than the American and it's my culture and heritage. I am half Japanese. And anime is for both kids and adults. They treat their anime as a adult movie rather than some rated PG kids movie. They treat their anime as a fine art and not some silly little cartoon for little children.
