Rancho Berrnardo. Poway, and Penasquitos are kind of middle-of-the-road communities that feature safe neighborhoods, yet housing isn't as sky-high as the coast (these are about 7 to 10 miles from the coast measured as a direct line). They'll probably still be shockingly high-priced compared to Indiana.
They're about a 20 minute drive to downtown assuming non-rush hour traffic.

Mira Mesa has more apts. It's very near La Jolla and the northern part of San Diego, which is nicer. The southern part is too close to TJ, Mexico in my opinion.
Better schools nearby are Rancho Berrnardo. Poway, and Penasquitos... but you'll probably have to buy or rent a house, which could be expensive.
You might want to find a job first.

Mission Valley and University City are good places for young families and have tons of condo's but can be kind of pricey b/c they are newer developments. Clairemont Mesa and Bay Park are also reasonable and all these neighborhoods are centrally located an close to the beach, shopping, and downtown. Neighborhoods north of Interstate 8 are better than south of it, the closer you get to mexico the more like it it becomes. Point Loma is also another neighborhood checking out.

I agree with Fred, given your personal situation, Rancho Berrnardo. Poway, and Penasquitos are your best options. This is considered the north inland area. Although a bit less expensive than other areas, they are just as beautiful. Penasquitos sits high in the hills. Several homes have ocean views.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

La Mesa, Mira Mesa, Escondido, Vista are places that are not as expensive. The further east you go....the cheaper places are.
Housing is more expensive here, but often you will find that salaries are also higher than in other regions.
