Yes, the deal is insane, but, logical at the same time. LA are not just paying for a player, they're paying for a marketing 'gimmick' that will recoup the money back.

Beckham has a huge fanbase, in asia inparticular, and with the L.A merchandise they will now buy, the club will profit immensely.

He should also help them on the pitch and even months before he signs, he's already increases the profile of MLS around the world.

I know a few million people from the UK will suddenly start taking an interest, and the TV coverage here will probably get a decent slot, instead of the 4am re-runs we get now.

I think there's only one way to answer your question:
"Yup."

Now ima tell you how insane this deal was. $250 million for a old soccer player way past his prime? How desperate were you? I mean if Americans aren't into MLS, why would you think we're into soccer all the way in England? We wouldn't even know who Beckham was if that movie didn't come out, which made everyone bend it like him. And you no the majority of the people who used that phrase a lot didn't even understand it. They were probably asking themselves, "Bend what? And why should we bend it like this Beckham guy? How does he bend it anyway?"

Anyways, the MLS is just desperate for anything that'll increase their popularity. They're trying to gain respect and to solidify themselves as an entertaining, legit sports league in America. And they have accomplished this in the aquisition of Beckham. We've all been talking about it since it happened right? So yea it's insane as ever, the guy is washed up. But they've gotten people talking about MLS, and that's the whole purpose behind it.

Well tell me: insane for whom? I mean any soccer team in the US is just mediocre, and Beckham is not a bad player. Well now he has become more a fashion star than a player, but he's still good compared with this country's soccer teams, they just suck!!!
And I used to like Beckham but if he preferred money instead of playing good soccer in a good team, then he is no longer a respectable player, he's just a clown, but as I said compared with americans players he is a diamond. So they need him, and even more for publicity, maybe some other great players from aound the world will feel HIGHLY motivated to play in here, and let's hope so, because the US really sucked in the World CUp, and in any soccer event.

not insane in the slightest way

1) only $51 million is garunteed, so he might not even make $199 million of it

2) would you be talking about this if it was written as only $51 million or $75 million? Not as much. THis contract gives the MLS publicity

3) D.C united was recently bought for around $33 million...the whole team...Beckham is garunteed more than that [that makes it a lil insane, but i found that very interesting]

Obviously the Galaxy believes that they are making an investment that will pay back dividends. He isn't the best player and has by many estimates already reached his prime.

He is extremely marketable with plenty of glamor for a sport that doesn't have any major stars in the US. I think initial reaction will be very positive for US soccer, since they are struggling to gain an audience. I doubt that the Galaxy will think he is worth it in the end, but that maybe his contract will encourage other major stars to play in the US.

I certainly wouldnt be complaining If i was Him! :p

However that much for a Soccer Player in the US? CRAZY!!!

I find it hard to believe That Soccer Makes that Much Money! to pay anyone that sort of contract.

I can't Wait for the Day That Sports Athletes Price themselves into bankruptcy! Hopefully One of these Days a Normal Hardworking Man can afford to Take His Whole Family to a Sporting Event again as opposed to Businesses Handing out Free Tickets to their Preferred clients.

I don't think it was insane...The last few years they have been pushing that guy down the public throat trying to put him in a Payton Manning or Michael Jordon type....The big contract brings him to the states where they are going try to build off his rep. and make soccer a big sport....I think it will fall short myself...The average American including myself could really care less about soccer its something my 10 year old daughter does on Saturday

You tell me. $250 million for a washed up never-was. If paying that kind of money to a guy that probably won't help the team one iota is insane, then it is. I think it'll do more harm than good for the MLS.
