I'm single and do all my own laundry. I agree in part with answer number one, but with no offense "Correctly" is relative.
Certainly sorting by type is valid, IE: Towels, intimates, etc., but so too is color, and fabric.
Consider natural fabrics, might accept dyes more readily but lose them easier, or again in multiple laundering. Synthetics may have properties that not only make them more durable in laundering, but HOLD dyes better.
Another issue should be original cost, and your attachment to any particular garment. Without question you'd be upset if your fave top stained from a dark, primary color garment included in the load,,,OR,,, That same top snagged by the zipper on your fave Jeans. It may be that more, smaller loads are the better way to launder?
As a single guy, and a contractor, I have a lot of work clothes, worn more than Nice/Dress, but I am conscious of blacks with whites, towels that shed, etc.

It is better by color and material, for instance, all darks together, but then separate those by putting all the tough materials together, such as jeans, and the lighter, such as t-shirts. Also wash towels together, and delicates, silk, panties, and bras together. I just think of the colors bleeding, so I never stick light with dark, and the fact that the fabrics are beating around in there, so the heavier fabrics will hurt the more delicate. I know it sounds dumb, but my laundry is always done correctly.

With very gentle clothes and with our dress clothes that can be machine washed, I seperate them by color. Anything that I'm washing in cold water like sport clothing or jeans and t-shirts I toss them together.

In the old days you just boiled everything together in a big vat. Of course everything was either wool or cotton. Now you can buy laundry sorters with half a dozen different dividers. Best to get a sorter. Just read those labels and sort away. :-)

I don't separate anything. I just put it on warm and hope nothing happens to them.
