Seems to me the electric fuel pump has gone weak.. allowing the fuel lines to vapor-lock!

Does this help any?

By "start up", - do you mean "won't crank", - or won't run?? Most of the Japanese cars have a small relay "in front" of the starter relay, - to carry more current to starter relay than the "key switch can handle"! I have had two Mazdas that did this regularly. I finally took the "cover boot" off the first relay and would short across the cable connections to kick the second one in, - then I could get inside and try key, - and starter would take right off. If it cranks- but won't start,- then you most likely have a fuel problem. Possibly a weak fuelpump (electric if has fuel injection), - or you could have a small leak in fuel hose, and get air in between fuelpump (if not in tank) and gastank. Air in line may take a long time to "bleed" it out through "overflow system". Cool gas pumps through fuel lines better than hot gas (especially if it is vaporizing)! Now the "hot gas", - check to see that the fuel lines aren't running close to the exhaust system, - due to a missing heat shield, or maybe bent fuel line. Last thing, -you may have a bad sensor feeding wrong information into computer, - which in turn shuts the system down till that sensor cools off, (& maybe registers properly then).Intermittent things are naturally the hardest to find!!

You need to replace the main relay it controls the fuel pump. Buy a new one if u get a used one u will have the same problem again later.

Relay is under dash next to drivers kick panel. We had to pull the dash out 6 inches to reach it. I wired it with longer wire and ground so it can be easily replaced. $25. Junkyard. We call it a fuel relay.

It could just be a bad signal being relayed to the ecu and that can be reset by disconnecting the power. I would try this first. You can do this or take it to a mechanic, it shouldn't cost very much if the mechanic is honest.
Good luck to you!
