A torrent is a file. .torrent It contains the hash (call it a digital signature that helps insure that you get an uncorrupted copy), the name of the file and the name or the tracker(s) that are coordinating the download among other info.
The tracker just coordinates the swarm, which is the group of people uploading and downloading the file. The files are hosted on other peoples comps, not on the tracker.
Your 2 basic types of BTers are Leeches and Seeders. Leeches have only a portion of the file and Seeders have a complete copy. Leecher is also a derogatory term for those who disconnect as soon as they get a complete copy but don't share.
You name it and it's probably on BT somewhere. Check out the links below for some good search sites. I'll put them at the bottom.
This is necessarily a brief, non-technical description of bittorrent and torrent files in general. Try dessent.net for more in depth info from beginner to master.
As an extra, get PeerGuardian to provide security from such wonderful peeps as the RIAA. It's free and very much advised.
Good luck and happy BTing.

Torrents are a popular file sharing service developed by Bram Cohen that prevents people from downloading constantly unless they are willing to share in the overall transmission load on the network.

Released in the summer of 2001, BitTorrent is similar to KaZaA and other distributed swapping services where users download from other users and do not use a centralized directory as in the original Napster service. However, BitTorrent is also different than all of them because it makes every downloading user an uploading user.
