A crappy insult to fine Italian cooking everywhere.
Don't be sad, it's not there.

Olive Garden serves dishes that are based on Italian cuisine, for the American audience. The prices are slightly more expensive than a diner, but not as expensive as a really nice, sit-down restaurant. Olive Garden caters to the lunch crowd by offering an all-you-can-eat soup, salad, and breadsticks meal. They also often offer a neverending pasta bowl, meaning that you can have as many portions as you like of different pastas in combination with different sauces. The other dishes on the menu are typical Italian fare. I know very few people who wouldn't be okay to eat at the Olive Garden, which makes it a good place if you have a large group or picky eaters.

Circa 2016:
It's good, generally, with decent prices. Depending on the entree, can be very, very good (like some of their special Lasagna entrees they have right now)
Last time I dined at the Garden (in Okemos, Michigan, in the eastern suburban area of Lansing, MI) the table next to me had a group of native Italians, and they seemed to like what they were eating.
Yes, it's a chain restaurant, but for a chain restaurant, they do some really nice things.
The free sample of wine given out didn't hurt, either.

I have been tempted to do this but not as a prank but for real... I LOVE cheese on my food. It's almost like some people use ketchup! Olive Garden (not plural) is a great restaurant chain here in the USA, and I have never... NEVER been disappointed by ANY of their dishes. I LOVE Olive Garden, am addicted to it, and recommend it highly to everyone. Oh, and whoever is in charge of hiring the male wait staff and bus boys had good taste in "eye candy!" WHOO HOO! Have a polite day. Etiquette takes over where laws end.

It's a good thing that you don't have one in Australia. Whatever kind of food it's suppose to be, it's bad food. Olive Garden as an Americanized version of Italian food is an insult to Americans.

I imagine there are many Italians or Italian-Americans highly incensed by even the thought of it, which I find rather amusing. It's an American twist on real Italian food I think. I worked there one summer between school breaks. Common complaints I heard were that the sauces were too salty and that people use too much. They try to emphasize wine consumption with meals as part of an "Italian" dining experience, although I suspect that has as much to do with making money as anything else. It is part of the chain of Darden restaurants, and they have successfully grasped the concept that people seem to like "gimmicky" restaurants. They are also the parent company to Smokey Bones and Red Lobster, among a couple others, which are both also "themed." My overall assessment is that I enjoy many of dishes there, but be warned that it isn't "authentic" Italian cuisine.

Some dishes that we've had and liked: Lasagna, Chicken Marsala, Spaghetti, Five-Cheese Ziti, Eggplant Parmigiana, Chicken Parmigiana, Fettuccine Alfredo, Tour of Italy......
With your entree, you get a choice of soup or salad - and breadsticks. The salad is great - all you can eat too!
Appetizers we've had and liked: Brushetta, Mozzarella Fonduta, and Calamari.
During the holidays, they have this Pumpkin Cheesecake drizzled with caramel on top. It's great.
Take a look at their website for more information.
