I've heard so many wonderful things about Myrtle Beach, I've really considered moving there myself. They say that it's replacing the Florida Keys, because the Florida Keys is so expensive. I lived in the Florida Keys for about 18 years, the waters are beautiful, you can actually see the lobster walking on the bottom of the ocean floor. I think that you will adapt very well coming from California, just please don't attempt to ride out any hurricanes. Think about all the devastation to Louisiana and Mississippi due to Katrina, if they say a hurricanes coming, just go for a drive INLAND...............

Myrtle beach basically has 2 main roads. North Kings high way, and 17. They are both vertical, north-south, and will take you from north to south myrtle in 25 minutes tops. usually less. during vacation season traffic is bad. Central myrtle is probably the ideal place to live. You can find apartments pretty much anywhere. My brother and I lived in a hotel in central myrtle right alongside the beach. The down-side to central is that you basically have to drive to North myrtle or South when you wanna go do something.

Myrtle Beach has a 26 mile white sand beach. It is a tourist area so places to live may be expensive, but I don't think it is more than southern California. It has palm trees, so I think it looks something like CA.
I have visited both places. So, this is only my opinion.

i live in NC near hickory i have visited there not to mention my step mom use to live there... she loved it and i can say that it does feel safe.. there isn't much to do there they are turning it into a retirement type place... similar to low-key parts of Florida but i love it here in NC and i am sure that is just as great of spot as the mountains oh and it is not near as hot or busy as Florida either.. good luck if you are planning to move
