I've heard this used once...

Fate is like a map, all of your choices are laid out on it, you choose them one at a time, and each one leads you to a new road, with different streets branching off. You never know where you're going until you get there though..

I personally have decided I believe in this type of fate.

Just so we can be clear, Yahoo!Answers is supposed to be for us to help you, not the other way around. Whatever, though. I guess someone that actually contemplates the concept of existence deserves some kind of answer. My answer o all of your questions, while seemingly simple-minded, is actually quite well considered after much lengthy debate with many people of many standings: I don't give a f*ck. The way I see religion, they're all the same on some level anyway, so why give a damn what one wants over another? If fate is truly inescapable, why care how I influence it? I think the purpose of life is to not concern yourself with why you are alive, but to enjoy the life you have to the best of your ability, so I don't give a sh*t what the meaning is. Insert infinite loop ad nauseum. While it may seem lazy to just say I don't care about existence itself, I assure you I only arrived at this answer after agonizing over it for years. My viewpoint has since become something like, "I can't do anything about it anyway, so why care why/what/how." It has made my life much more fulfilling to concern myself less with the specifics and more with the general idea. I hope my answer satisfies you.

There's not one scintella of evidence of a pre-ordained plan. What makes a person stand out anyway?

Greatness may last a thousand years for a few and eternally for none. On the scale of earthly time, individual lives are but mere blinks of an eye. We're born, we live, we die and then you're not heard from ever again. There might be a tombstone or family tree made with your name on it, but eventually the tombstone weathers from age and who knows what media your family tree will be used. All the memories and accomplishments will be totally forgotten, unless you're a Hitler or Alexander the Great type person.

In a thousand years, your bones will be dust and no other trace of your existence will be seen, unless, of course you become fossilized for some reason, but even then, after thousands of years more, that will be disintegrated into dust. We influence the lives of our children and others, but they too will eventually die. So what's the point of living?

In astronomical terms, the Earth will eventually succumb to the supernova of our Sun, it's an astonomically certainty the earth will be burned to a crisp.

So does death render our lives meaningless. If we were immortal, that would be the ultimate in boredom, repetition, day after day, of doing the same thing for thousands of years (hundreds may be OK, but nothing beyond that)....but i digress, back to your question.

It all boils down to how creative we can be in the short period of time we have on this earth....Our activities need to be worthwhile for their own sake, not because they fulfill some supernatural transcendental purpose....LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST DAMNIT, YOU WON'T GET A SECOND CHANCE!!!

no. I beleive in things that go in the same direction, due to luck. This is what you could call fate. But its not impossible to over-ride...man's will can conquer the tides and currents of the oceans...Its only because we don't beleive in ourselves...that we fail to do so.

Besides, fate is like everything else...its just a bunch of things that add up, and form a 'wave'....this is not ordained...it happened by luck...just the same, the wave can come tumbling down. If you crumble from its weight, you will never endure, and fall victim to the illusion of a fated premise....never do, always persevere, never give up, and if its beyond your ability...come back stronger next time or just don't mind the tides and waves and look at the horizon.

No. How is it that your life is laid out when you were born?
Life is sort of like a map. You have twists and turns, ups and
downs. But it's not all exact. You may start off as someone on
the street, but then 10 or 15 years later you are recognized by
everyone in the world. It's your actions that speak, not fate. It's
what you do yourself, not what was laid out for you.

Fate is a series of random events and decisions that determine the directions ones life will take.

My steps are as ordered as I am able. We are as much determining as determined. If you believe the math is different, perhaps you are not feeling very good today, or perhaps too good, We should keep a balanced spirit between very good and very bad and be alert to opportunity. Too much over determination on either side and you are in trouble. To do this you need faith, not obs-tenant or stubborn belief.

Absolutely not, but I cannot give you any proof.

You asked if I BELIEVE. That is an act of faith, and I'm not talking religion here.

I have always maintained that I am the captain of my life's ship; the director of my life's play.

I make my choices, make my plans, and move forward toward a goal - short or long term.

To believe that one's life was predetermined would be anathema to me.
