There are bacteria ALL over our bodies. They exist on our skin, in our mouths, and in our gastro-intestinal tract. Ever wonder why you wake up and your mouth tastes horrible? When we sleep and our mouth is open, bacteria enter, and their natural processes leave our mouths tasting horrible. Ever wonder why humans get body odor? Bacteria on our skin perform natural processes which lead to odor, particularly under our arms and in the groin areas, where it is warm and moist. They also contribute to the odor of flatulence. This NORMAL, HEALTHY bacteria that exists in and on our bodies is called the "normal flora".
The flora serve very important functions. First, they steal resources from potentially harmful microbes that might be there and infect us if the flora weren't there. Second, in the GI tract, they digest indigestible materials and waste products that our systems cannot handle.

In addition to the ways bacteria help our bodies:
Bacteria:
-- are the source for many antibiotics
-- put nitrogen in the ground to help plants grow so we can have food
-- decompose dead matter to recycle the nutrients so we can have food
-- are used in industrial processes to make various foods and other products
-- are changed through genetic engineering to make chemicals that we need
