That can be a tough decision, especially if you're a hardcore gamer, or if you're into online console gaming.

The xbox 360 is truely a masterpiece, it can play most of the original xbox games, its very expansive, and there are a LOT of amazing games on the console so far.

On the other hand, a laptop is multifunctional. Schoolwork and research can be easily completed and saved on the go, without all those annoying wires and messes like a home pc would. You can still listen to music you've saved from cd's and mp3s (just like the 360) and depending on the type you can still play your games.

The one thing to really pay attention to;

Accessories.

Xbox will obviously need controllers, games, and if you want xbox live, a monthly plan.

If you're still looking to work out some gaming on a laptop, its going to cost a bit more. hp laptops are amazing in my opinion, first person shooters will need a pretty decent graphics card, which arent interchangable for laptops. MMO's (world of warcraft, star wars galaxies, final fantasy XI, etc.) will require decent ram. usually 512 with cut it.

It depends on your taste in games, and your dedication to school/work.

School is much more important, but the decision is yours.

(of course you could always work on your persuasion skills by talking a friend into a 360, then you get both.)

good luck.

My personal opnion is XBOX 360. I don't like PC games. I just never got into them, and I find them more fun on a console. Plus keeping games off my PC helps me get more work done.

Laptop.

Consoles are..."single use" items, and compared to mid-level and up computers, grossly inefficient. (Graphics & games play is better on the computer.) Consoles are seeing more games, because they are easier to program, since you only have to deal with one hardware set-up. For PC's, the programmer(s) have to deal with dozens of possible configutations. PC games also tend to have more to them than console games, since they can come on multiple disks.

Yes, I know that I've strayed, but the point is still valid. :D
