A Bachelor's in Social Work (BSW) is a four-year general practitioner degree. Depending on the state in which you live, BSW's can be licensed, but generally not for clinical work as the previous answerer stated.
A Masters in Social Work (MSW) can be done in one year (one an accelerated track for those with BSW's) or two, although some schools may require more (mine was a three-year program that was combined with a theology degree).
Most states have title protection laws, which means that you cannot call yourself a social worker unless you have a degree from an accredited school of social work. I strongly recommend you make sure the program you select is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. I have a friend whose program was not accredited and she had to get the MSW (not on an accelerated track) in order to practice.
For most states, licensure requires a couple thousand hours of supervised experience post-MSW to be considered a LCSW, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Not all social workers are licensed - if you are not going into direct practice (clinical counseling) you may not need it.
I have never sought licensure - I took an administrative track and have loved my career in social work administration and now college administration.
Social work is not all casework with large loads, as some have suggested. It is a diverse and rewarding career and I highly recommend it. Whether you do a four year BSW or seek an MSW or even go for the LCSW, you will enjoy it. Best of luck -

Depends. The term social worker is used (and misused) on such a broad scale that it may be difficult to tell what you're asking for.
A clinical social worker will require a masters degree (a Master of Social Work or MSW). That being said there are a ton of social service providers who are NOT social workers. I have a staff full of case workers under my supervision who are excellent at what they do but few have any formal degree at all. Many MSW's end up in private practice doing everything from marriage counseling, to court ordered mediation, to mental health work to contract outpatient placement to Alcohol and Drug treatment, you name it. It's a wide open field.
Depending on what it is you want to do and how hard you're willing to work to do it an MSW may be invaluable or it may be less than irrelevant.

That completey depends on the type of work you want to do. Consider whether or not you want to become licensed as that will take longer. You can get a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work in 4 years. But licensure takes at least an additional 1 to 2 years. Hope this helps!

Social worker will take 6 years to complete. You need 4 years for Bachelor degree and 2 years for Master degree. MSW Master of Social Worker. In the real world you do need Master degree in order to get a good paying job. However, you can do it with 4 years of social worker degree. But, you will not be able to get more pay and unable to move up. Social worker is a hard job and you will have 80 cases load per year. If you start with 2 years in city college you will be able to transfer to 4 years college to complete your social worker degree. By the way, I wish you the best and remember you will not be rich to be a social worker and it is a hard earning job. If your heart is for social worker then it is yours.

It takes a 4-year degree in human services and then a masters degree in social work. A psychiatrist can make significantly more, but it requires much more education. A psychiatric social worker can make a good living, and is very much in demand in most areas of the United States. Often they are part of unions, and good benefits and job stability as well.

I am currently majoring in Social Work at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. A Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW) will take the same amount of time as any other four year degree. If you wanted to go further and get your master's degree (MSW) it will only take an extra year if you have an undergraduate degree in social work already. It will take two years if you don't.
