When she had her daughter, her teenaged son died of a drug overdose while he was visiting her in the Bahamas hospital where she gave birth.

well, the short answer is yes. The hughe knokers.
The longer answer is 3 things:
1) she posed for playboy. The thing is that she is a big girl so she became famous for braking the mold. It made a lot of big girl fans very happy. Thats right, not all men want their girls to be 5'2" and weight like 90 pounds kind of like a middle school girl.
2) She married this old rich men who later died. It was a sensational story because is the old marry the old rich guy so you can get the millions. I don't know if he actually left her the millions though.
3) She had the anna Nicole t.v. show in which she was herself. This was at the begining of the reality t.v. crazed. The girl is pretty crazy and demanding so a lot of people where atracted by the show. People like to see that famous people are just as crazy and messed up as they are. Also, she was a bit overweoght in this show which added to the appeal. Yes, belive it or not there are a bunch of men that like girls with big bones.
Note that during the t.v. show she was big bone. She was pretty shapely for the playboy possing. She is still pretty big height wise.

Well she first was in the 1993 Playboy playmate of the year, which started her slutty carreer.Another reason is that then she married that oil business executive billionaire J. Howard Marshell, 63 years her senior, in which people critizied her for marring him for his money. Now she is in a legal battle to have his estate. This gave her alot of publicitity....i wouln't necessary call her famous, but she is pretty well known for those three things; playboy magazine, marriage, and legal battles. Smith movie roles closely resemble her public persona -- a vaguely ironic rendition of Jayne Mansfield (and perhaps Anita Ekberg), a blonde Superwoman purring . . .
