what to see on a cross-country road trip?

my girlfriend and i are taking two weeks (or more!) to drive from boston to seattle in august and i would LOVE some suggestions as to where we should stop. it seems so overwhelming so please help!

Go to www.roadsideamerica.com. They list oodles of odd and weird things to see all across the country. You need to plan your route. I would try to do some Route 66 if it's not too far out of the way.
