Home Depot and many other like stores, sell by the linear foot. Certainly they have PRE cut lumber, and it's marked at a price, IE: 2x4x8 spruce studs # 2 grade might sell for $3.86 on sale? But lumber costs vary as much as New York Stock Exchange stock prices, and sometimes as frequently.
Without question you should PLAN a project in which you'll need 2x4's. and buy what you need. Example: Studs for an 8ft high wall, don't need to be bought at 10 ft, unless you have a use for bracing, in which case the extra 24 inches (minus saw blade cut widths) can be trimmed further to the space between studs.
It makes little sense to buy more than you can use, as much as it does to buy an 8 ft 2x4 when you needed a 9 ft.

The prices vary at almost every Home Depot location.
Average for an 8 foot 2x4 is about 3.50. You will pay a little more for pressure treated wood.
Lumber prices fluctuate just like gas prices so be sure to check around for the best price if you plan on buying a lot!

Last time I was there, it was a little under $3 for an 8' poplar 2x4; better woods would be more expensive.

I don't know where you are from, but where I come from time is money, a lot of money. My experience with home depot is, buy some 2x4's I'm there for at least 1- 2 hours when you can go to lumber company for least 1/2 the time. You tell me where you save money........

2 X 4's come in different standard lengths, with different woods and different grades. The higher the quality, the more it will cost. The longer it is the more it will cost. The longer it is the more it will cost per linear foot. And, the price is set based on the price on the commodities market, just like petroleum, orange juice concentrate, soy beans, and pork bellies. As the commodity price rises the price in the store rises, and as the commodity price falls, so does the in-store price. Depending on the number of contracts that a store bought lowe's might have a better price than home depot or vice-a-versa. 2 X 4 X 96" range in price from about $2.50 at the low end to $5-6 at the upper end.

Since we do not know where you live or the size of the 2 x 4 you want (8', 10, 12, etc) why dont you simply call the Home Depot in your area.
