How do you handle pay for employess who are called to jury duty? Do you give them regular pay, pay them nothing or something in between?

Please identify yourself as an employer or employee and please tell me how many employees you have.

Thanks for the input.

I work in the payroll department of a large multinational company.

When we have an employee on jury duty, we pay them for a day's pay.

Ex: a full time employee is guaranteed 8 hours in a day. If he missed an entire day for jury duty, we would pay 8 hours at his regular rate for jury pay.
If he works an off hours shift and worked 4 hours before going to jury duty, we would pay 4 hours of jury pay to complete his 8 hours of guaranteed pay. The employee would not get 8 hours of jury pay on top of hours worked.

Also, we deduct anything paid by the court. If the employee is paid $15 for jury service. We would pay him 8 hours at his normal rate and then take a flat deduction for the $15.

Hope this helps.

As an employee, I was paid for my jury duty service days at the regular rate.

As an employer, if you haven't already, be sure to check state laws on this matter for any "small print" legalities that may influence how you handle your own employees on jury duty.

Some companies make up the difference between regular pay and jury pay. Some companies pay nothing.
