2003 E320. No problems yet, but that's because it's rarely used. Only has about 7000 miles.
In the last several years, Mercedes has had their quality tank. It started with the ML. I'd like to say Americans can build quality cars, but the evidence just doesn't support it. However, for some strange reason, Mercedes took the quality hit from the ML and it somehow spread across their entire line. E-Class and C-Class were affected the most.
Very recently (I'm talking a couple years or so), Mercedes admitted to their crappy quality and committed to fixing the situation (altho they still raised hell about the pathetic JD Power rating; despite it being totally appropriate). The new models are supposed to have better quality.
We'll see. So far, only the new S-class has come out. There aren't that many of those and I haven't followed too closely to see if they've had immediate problems.
The key will be the upcoming C-class and when the E-class gets redesigned. Those sell in big numbers so if there are problems, we'll find out quick.
On our 2003 E320, it's an absolutely gorgeous car. Inside and out, I love it. However, you can tell they cheaped out in certain areas. We had a 2000 Dodge Caravan. Bought the thing for $13000 brand new from the dealer. It's door handle is of better quality than the one on the Merc (minus the chrome). I used to be active on mbworld.org My model E-class (the W211) had a ton of problems with it. Possibly the second worst line next to the ML.
We used to have a 1985 500SEL. Mercs used to be tanks. However, I am sure the E320 won't last as long as that 500SEL with comparable mileage.
I wouldn't recommend an E-Class unless it was a model W210 or older. Otherwise, wait for the next redesign which should come in a couple of years or so. Still, never a good idea to get the first year of any model, particularly a german car. Germans do not know electronics. They're almost as bad as the British.

I am an American living in Germany for over 20 years.
Had a 1980 something 280E.. short time, fixed it up and sold it.
Had a 1992 230TE. Great car!!! Sold it because I wanted something newer.
Had a 1999 E320T what a beauty, chip tuned and at 166mph I decided it was fast enough. Ride was fantastic. Did have some problems with bulbs burning out and rust around the rear hatch handle. My boss has it now and it keeps going into limphome when he runs it hard.
Have a 1991 500 SEC Lorinser.. been waiting for this baby for years.
Pics can be seen at http://www.angelfire.com/wi/myhog/cars.html
My opinion and that of many people I know is that when MB went from the W124 to W210 body style they lost quality control. Only in the last 2 years have then gotten their act together. So I would not recommend a W210 E class from 97-04 unless the price was right.
If it doesn't have a star.. .it's not a real car

Contrary to what was said above, the ML320 and American manufacture have nothing to do with Mercedes' problems. I have a 1999 E320, made in Stuttgart, and it's had tons of problems. The issues are mistakenly called quality issues, they are not. Most stem from horrible engineering of the electrical system. And surprisingly, the engineering is indifferent throughout: service access is difficult, even simple things like changing lightbulbs is complicated, etc. . Night and day from the older Merc's I've owned. I hope the latest models finally have the kinks worked out. But anything from the W210's on is suspect.

Mine is a '95 E320 with 157,000 miles on it. It still pulls like a locomotive and is a very nice car. It has not had any major repairs that I know of and runs perfect, with no leaks or problems at this point, knock on Burl wood. It has some slight wear, especially the driver's seat, but I think this is one of the finest cars ever built. If I were a millionaire I would just put some more money into it and add a few more like it to my collection, rather than buy something else. The newer ones ('96 and up) just seem kind of sterile to me, and they don't smell German.
I think this is very true of the older ones:
"Mercs have this characteristic which is that the engine, chassis and the interior all merge together into one feeling which is transmitted to your hands and which makes you want to drive regardless of the time or destination...makes you want to drive, and drive, and take care of it like a pet (maybe I'm getting a bit too weird by now)."
"I highly recommend picking one up, if you have the means"

I have a 2001 E320 and it is a nightmare when it comes to maintenance. Every week it is one annoyance after another. It only has 36 K mi and it has been in the shop more than my Honda with 150,000 K mi. I love mercedes but they have definitly suffered in their quality depatment.

1992 300CE(coupe version of E-Class)
Have personally drove the car at 140MPH, and it felt like I was doing 70...
Fantastic interior, very quiet, comfortable, and fast. DOHC engine screams to 7000RPM.
HIGHLY recommended(for people who enjoy driving, and not posing)
