The US Constitution says that the president must make a report to congress once a year. Nowhere in The Constitution does it say that it must be a speech. However, it is traditional for the US President to provide that report in writing and in the form of a speech. Following a State of the Union speech, a president's approval rating has always increased, if only temporarily. These speeches have always been highly patriotic in content (difficult to disagree with) and are a political opportunity for the president and party in power. They are the adult equivalent of a high school pep rally ... rah, rah, rah ... go team go!

It's nothing more than a pr effort, designed to make Americans believe they're being guided by some masterful leadership. In actuality, the state of the union address is nothing more than hyperbole, lies, cheer leading, and pomposity. The members of Congress and the members of the administration are all engaged in an ongoing deception; they've lied to the American public for decades, and the State of the Union address is just another bit of b.s. The pathetic fact is that in three days, most Americans won't remember a thing that the President said, but they'll still be talking about the Colts game that brought Indianapolis to the SuperBowl. (By the way, I live in Indiana). -RKO-
