The First World War left crushing economic burdens on all the European countries. It has been estimated that the European victors owed an aggregate of $10 billion to the U.S.. The economic burdens of the European governments were multiplied when they had to rehabilitate devastated areas, to pay pensions to the wounded and to the relatives of the dead and to pay the interest due on the public and foreign debts. To add to the economic burdens of the European governments, trade and industry did not revive after the war. There was mass unemployment in Italy, Germany, Britain and France shortly after the war. The immediate result was that in Italy the people were so discontented with their government that they overthrew it. The long term result was that in order to solve their economic problems, most of the European nations tried to become economically self-sufficient and to keep out the products of other countries by building high tariff walls. Economic nationalism was a bad omen for the peace of Europe. However, in hindsight the huge amount of change the war brought about contained within it beneficial aspects. Women’s rights are often the most memorable positive outcome. Across Europe women had for the first time been working, having had to replace the gap in the workforce, as men were conscripted. In 1918 women were given the right to vote in England in recognition of their value during the War. It is interesting that up to that point the suffragettes had done little to sway public opinion in their quest for sexual equality. The War saw a new era of more sexual liberation with contraception being used on a large scale for the first time – however, there was also some disgruntlement amongst some men, some of whom came back and found their jobs already occupied as well as well as many men who were not able to bring themselves to accept females as equals to them. Divorce rates increased drastically after the war. Although the general consensus after the war seemed to indicate that women’s rights had improved, France proved a notable exception where contraception continued to be banned and women did not receive the vote until 1944. Whilst in Britain and America the employment rates of women increased after the war, levels of employment in France decreased. The overthrow of Empires (German Empire, Hapsburg Empire, Turkish Empire and Russian Empire) was regarded by many to also be a huge advantageous outcome of the war.
