I am thinking of getting some betta, but Ive heard that they attack other fish even thought they're another kind of species. Is it better to get a male or female betta. (I know that of you put 2 males together they will fight) Are female bettas territorial too?

i have a betta and i have done some research. The only way u can put a betta with other fish is if it is located in a 10 gallon fishtank.but they have to be a specif kind of fish.you see the more space the betta has, it wont have to confront the other fish.Dont overcrowd the fish tank, and only ppl that are experts at breeding can mix the female with the male.Or else the male WILL kill the female betta as well

Bettas can have different personalities. I have three bettas (1 male and 2 females) in my 45g tank along with guppies, platies, and a molly. Everyone is happy go lucky and there haven't been any fights.

If you give any fish enough aquarium space so they can have their own territory, you could be very fine indeed.

Female bettas can also be territorial. My friend has a male and a female in a much smaller aquarium than mine and the female attacked the male.

I would not suggest a male with most of the fish you have, most tetras will eat away a male bettas fins and the gourami will most likely attack the betta.

a female betta will probably do fine with these tank mates because her tail won't be so long so she won't be such a target.

be sure the tank is big enough though. the female betta need about two gallons, and the other fish you described either need big tank or are schooling fish, so a large tank is nessissary.

I suggest a female that will hold her ground and is fairly speedy so if any fish starts trouble she can handle it. I would recommend a crowntail female betta.

Male bettas only fight with other bettas, and females do fine with other females. I have had male bettas in community tanks and have never had a problem with the betta picking on the other fish, but I have had problems with the other fish picking on the betta.

Females do OK with other fish as will a single male. With other species, the non-bettas may chew the fins of the betta. I have used a net brooding pen in a larger tank to keep bettas with other fish. I used to have many fish, including bettas.

Yes males will kill females.Males are better looking and I was very
successful with adding a male in with a large amount of fish.I had no problems with the males I put in my tanks but I never combined males or females together they will kill. They did get along with other fish go figure.

You do not want more than one betta in an aquarium/bowl, limited space will entice the fighting. Female bettas can be together though. You do not want to put a male and female betta together because the male will chase her, because he will be ready to breed. She may not, so you will want to remove her from that. You could always get plenty of bettas, HOWEVER, you put them in separate bowls. They will attack other fish, especially fish that have long fantails, such as the Goldfish fantails and the guppies, it's a threat to them.

You never know, you CAN get a docile male Betta, and you can just as easily get a MEAN female... some just love to kill anything that invades their territory, male or female...

defanatly don't put male bettas with neons and guppies as they will complety eat neons and will nip the flimsy tail fins of gupies. it's usualy ok to put females but sometimes even the female will be agresive. after you put a female beta with other fish you should keep an eye on them for at least a week and if you notice any violence toward other fish remove her emediatly.

female bettas are generally better in community tanks than males. they are territorial but once they have established their territory it is usually not a problem. a tank of females makes a nice tank. if you get a juvenile female -- often you can get them 1/2 sized -- it is easier to get them acclimated to your community. gouramies and bettas are related and usually it is a bad match.
