I take 2 hours of dance class a week and I think I've got shin splits but I'm not sure. There are times when my shins hurt terribly and sometimes it's so bad that I can't walk for 10 or 20 minutes at a time.

Shin splints rear their ugly heads a few hours after working out (walking, running, dancing, etc) without proper arch support. Find a good pair of arch supports to put in your dance shoes. It will do wonders for you!

Shin splints are more chronic than acute. It's the muscles tha dorsiflex your foot (upward) that cause the compartment type syndrome we call shinsplints, and theycan be naging. Stretch your ankles a lot, take Ibuproffen, alternate between hot and cold packs...It'll eventually heal.
