oh sorry i know that theyre both scratches

but my boyfriend said if you hit a ball its 'ball in hand' and you can put it anywhere

if you dont its just a scratch and you have to put it behind the 2nd dots.

or maybe the other way around i forget

If you hit a ball or don't hit a ball and scratch it's the other person turn where they can place the white ball any where behind the line. If you scratch and only have the black ball on table you lose

I don't play much pool any more but I think scratch is scratch--either way. Even if you sink a ball and then scatch, it's still a scratch.

either way, I believe it is the other person's turn and they put the cue ball where they want ('above' the dot where you break from)

(ooh, I really know the technical terms, huh?)
